Opening Remarks at Michael Sandel’s Lecture
in the Class of “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning”

May 18, 2011
It is our great honor and fortune to have Professor Michael Sandel with us today to participate in our class of “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning.” This course by Professor Bin Yang of our school is of course very much inspired by Michael’s “Justice”course at Harvard, which has enrolled over 15,000 students and is the first Harvard course made freely available online and on public television.
About a year ago, I visited Michael in his office at Harvard. We talked over an hour about his course. Michael showed me his course materials and explained to me his way of organizing the class and why he needed more than 70 teaching fellows to co-teach the class. I then proposed to him for a visit to our school at Tsinghua to give a lecture in a new required course under school’s planning on the similar subject. That was the origin of today’s lecture. I am so delighted to see that after more than one year this finally came true.
In this semester, Professor Bin Yang, his 15 Teaching Fellows, and his 200 students began a heroic, and perhaps historic, venture to launch the new required course we named “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning.” I believe that it is the first of its kind in any Chinese universities. “Justice” at Harvard is listed as “Moral Reasoning 22.” We name it “Critical Thinking and Moral Reasoning” to emphasize the “critical thinking” aspect. It is a part of a great experiment in undergraduate education currently under way in our school.
Michael is our very special guest professor for today’s class. His willingness to teach in this course shows his strongest support to our experiment of curriculum reform at theSchoolofEconomicsand Management atTsinghuaUniversity. My colleagues and students at the school greatly appreciate Michael’s support for the course of undergraduate education reform not only in our school, but also more broadly, inChina. This is not just one class; it is a beginning of an era.
Thank you, Michael, for being part of this class, and for being part of the undergraduate education reform inChina.
